Resources
A small set of vinyl resources we trust: care, grading, discovery, community and gear.
Care & Cleaning
How to keep your records playable for decades. The basics matter more than fancy gear.
- Discogs Digs
Discogs runs an editorial site with articles on cleaning, storage, and care. Search "care" or "cleaning" once you land.
- The Vinyl Factory
Independent magazine. Their Features section has good guides on storage and care, with proper writing rather than listicles.
- /r/vinyl Community Wiki
Community-maintained guidance. Cheaper than buying a cleaning machine to find out which solution you should have started with.
Grading & Condition
The one thing that turns a £200 record into a £20 one. Read these once and you stop being surprised by grades.
- Discogs Grading Help
The grading definitions used on every Discogs marketplace listing. Vinyl Monkey prices come from this same scale.
- Goldmine Magazine
Long-running US collector magazine. They wrote the grading guide everyone else copies. Worth bookmarking for the resource section.
- Discogs Digs: Collecting
Articles on matrix numbers, first pressings, and how to tell an original from a reissue. Good background for navigating the marketplace.
New Releases & Discovery
Where to find what's coming next. Beyond whatever the streaming algorithm is pushing this week.
- Record Store Day
The annual event (April every year, plus a smaller Black Friday drop). The release list usually drops about a month before the date.
- Bandcamp Daily
Independent and reissued vinyl, especially in jazz, soul, and electronic. The recommendations aren't gamed for SEO.
- Vinyl Me, Please
A subscription service with a blog of curated picks and reissue reviews. The bias is obvious (they want you to subscribe) but the writing is good.
Community & Forums
Where collectors actually hang out. For asking 'is this pressing legit', 'what does this matrix mean', or just to share a haul.
- /r/vinyl
The biggest general community. Useful for everyday questions and to get a sense of what's circulating this week.
- Steve Hoffman Music Forums
The audiophile end of the conversation. Best place online for mastering chat, reissue analysis, and "which pressing of X sounds best".
- VinylHub
Directory of independent record stores worldwide, contributor-maintained. Useful when travelling. Search by city.
Equipment & Setup
Turntables, cartridges, phono stages. You don't need an expensive rig to start, but you do need an informed one.
- Turntable Lab Buying Guides
Independent shop with thoughtful buying guides organised by budget. Reliable starting point if you have no idea what to look for.
- Wirecutter Turntable Reviews
Lab-tested recommendations from NYT's review team. The safe-default picks if you don't want to disappear down the audiophile rabbit hole.
- VWestlife (YouTube)
Honest gear reviews from the cheap, archival, and vintage angle. The antidote to anyone telling you you need to spend £3000 to start.
